April showers bring May flowers. We are really hoping April showers bring families into the shelter to find a new family member!
Happenings at the Humane Society
Happenings here at the Humane Society. We are bursting at the seams with dogs. We currently have 3 Rottweilers and all three have had major medical procedures. The medical bills have been sky high lately. We have dogs with cancer, needing amputations, ear, eye and skin infections and heart worm. But these animals still greet us with a tail wag and ready for love.

Rover was a shy dog that came to us as a stray. He warmed up to staff in no time. Some gentlemen have come to the shelter a few times looking for a dog to add to each of their families. These gentlemen are both hearing impaired and have their homes set up accordingly. When Rover went home within days he had learned that the flashing light means the phone is ringing and now gives his owner a tap on the arm, will sit right in front of him and will gently paw at him when someone is at the door. So this sweet shelter dog is now a service dog of his own doing and his owner has made plans to start official training with Rover.

Capri is a sweet Rottie that came to us months ago. She had a badly broken leg and mouth. She has had 3 surgeries and is healed physically. She needs to learn to trust again and needs a home that is understanding and patient. She really is a sweet girl and has been let down so many times by people. She has lived in a lot of different homes, some with other dogs and with children. She is going to be selective with her companions, but she is going to be a great addition to a home that will meet her special needs. Capri has good leash manners, and we have been working with her walking close to other dogs and interacting with them. If you have the space and are in need of some cuddle time with a big, sweet girl, she is waiting.

Spring babies are everywhere and I’m sure many more to come. Please spay and neuter your animals. That simple step will prevent so much suffering, from the animals who are abandoned because they are pregnant, to the puppies and kittens who are born not knowing if a permanent home will ever be theirs or the intact animals suffering from cancer, UTI and pyometra. Do spayed and neutered dogs and cats get those diseases, yes, except pyometra that is eliminated, but we see a lot more of it with intact animals and a lot more hit by cars or lost because hormones have taken over and they feel the need to wander looking for a mate. If you have not yet spayed or neutered your pet please contact Ohio Humane, Paws Clinic or your local vet and make that appointment.

We have lots of beautiful loving cats. Kittens will be coming soon so if you want a new kitty that is fixed, up to date on shots, wormed and loving, come see us.

We have projects planned for the spring: we will be increasing the outdoor kennels from 6 to 14, all roofed and available year-round. This past year we added two play yards for the dogs to use during playgroups, plus air conditioning, a new industrial washer and dryer, a pedestrian gate for added safety, a vaccine clinic, and training programs for staff and volunteers. Next up, our largest project yet: a comfortable free-roam cat lounge where cats can interact and exercise outside of cages.
